What is Cryptographic Hashing?

A cryptographic hash function is a mathematical algorithm that takes data of arbitrary size (like a password or a file) and maps it to a string of a fixed size (the "hash" or "digest").

Hashing is a one-way process. While it is very fast to compute the hash of a given file, it is computationally impossible to reverse the process and derive the original file from the hash. This makes hashing perfect for verifying data integrity and securely storing passwords.

Which algorithm should I use?

Different hashing algorithms offer different balances of speed and security:

  • SHA-256 / SHA-512: Part of the modern SHA-2 family. These are cryptographically secure and are the current industry standard for sensitive data, digital signatures, and password hashing.
  • MD5 / SHA-1: These are older algorithms that are now considered cryptographically broken and vulnerable to collision attacks. They should never be used for security purposes, but they are still occasionally used for fast, non-secure file integrity checks (checksums).

Browser-Native Security

Your data is 100% secure. OmniTools operates on a strict "Zero Server Upload" architecture. When you type or paste data into this tool, the hashing is performed entirely locally using the browser's native crypto.subtle.digest() Web Crypto API.

Your plaintext passwords and sensitive strings never leave your device and are never transmitted to our backend servers.
